LANGUAGE- To use forms of media I have used many various conventions which helped to put my magazine together. At the top of my magazine I used a large masthead. This was to show the title of the magazine and also next to it was the date and publication date. I wrote the masthead in purple and a block type font as I believe this made it stand out, the purple was used to carry on the Wyke colour scheme. It is also not a stereotyped colour for the audience. For example if my magazine was pink people would automatically think it's addressed to females, but with purple it's multi gender. Underneath this was the skyline/strap line - this was to basically sum up my magazine and what it was about. I used 'education parties activities' as I believe this will attract my audience into wanting to read it as it's at the top and will be something they read first. I added an indent, which is the Wyke logo next to the strap line as it's the logo so needs to be there somewhere, this is basically the credit and who produced the magazine, which was Wyke College.
To the left of my main image I used some cover lines to attract readers, I wrote it largely and used black and purple to make it stand out. Further down is some more cover lines with thumbnail images next to them. These are 'kickers' as they don't actually have much content to read, it tells you a little bit about the thumbnail image but add's 'turn to page..' to draw you into purchasing the magazine. I used a variety of thumbnails as I wanted to attract male and female audience. I used sport to attract the males as a lot play football and rugby etc at Wyke, and I used the art side to attract the female audience. I used a teasing contents at the bottom of my magazine, this was a competition so that students could win free tickets. I used this as lots of people just skim through the magazine but don't actually buy it, if there is something to participate in there would be a higher chance of it being purchased. At the bottom of my page is the bar code and price of the magazine, I am a little dissapointed with the outcome of this as some people said it's hard to read the price which I noticed when it was pointed out, next time I would use a different colour on this.
The main image on my front page is central and uses a MS (mid shot). I used this type of shot so we could see from the students waist upwards and what they are holding to promote the college. In this case the student is holding some books and the Wyke timetable, this shows good education. The student looks happy which represents a friendly college, she is also making eye contact with the audience which I believe is important to get them engaged.
During this process I have learn that there is many different type of conventions on a magazine front cover. They all have to be set out in a certain way, this creates a look of good presentation and organisation. I have also learn more about using cameras and the angles of which the photos should be taken, for example a mid shot is when the camera shows their waist to their head. I learnt more about using a blog and different techniques of uploading files and work.
INSTITUTION- The type of institution that would distribute my media product would be Wyke College. This is because the audience are small as it's only aimed at the actual college. It would be Wyke distributing it as they was the ones who created and published it. A third party wouldn't be a good idea for creating and distributing my magazine as they wouldn't actually be a party of Wyke and are literally seeing things from a third party view. Whereas if we used Wyke itself the students and teachers know more about Wyke and what goes on inside, using the students would create a better perspective of the college magazine because students could add their own outlook on what classes are like etc.
IDEOLOGY- The message given out on the Wyke College magazine has various meanings. For example one obvious one would be it wants to show it's for teenagers (16-25). To do this I have used a fun type of font and the colour scheme fits Wyke which would show it's for the college. The main image also shows a young girl which tells us she is involved with the magazine-therefore it would be for students her age. The magazine also give a value of education. The main image and cover lines all relate to education. 'New enrollment classes' this would show that Wyke is a very educational importance college. It will attract students to get involved and achieve a higher potential by being involved with an extra class. The main image also gives the same value and message to the audience as the student is holding her books which shows she is learning throughout Wyke. It needs to convey this message as Wyke is educational and it would be pointless not promoting this to the audience as it would create an illusion of Wyke being lazy.
Another message that is given in the magazine is the fun side of Wyke. This is shown many times on the front cover as right at the top we can clearly see the sky line says 'parties | activities' This would show us that there is many other things to do in Wyke apart from the educational side to it. Students often go to the Wyke parties which would not only give the idea they want students to feel like they can relax once in a while, but It would also give the idea that the magazine wants to draw the readers attention in. At the bottom of my page is a competition which also relates back to the parties side of Wyke. Using competitions we can get the idea and message that it's aimed at teenagers and they would enjoy taking part in whatever it is to get free tickets.
AUDIENCE- Using demographics and psycho graphics I found out my target audience for the magazine. The target audience would be 15-24 as students start when they leave school but can finish at any age so I used 25 as the example. My audience would be male AND female as both genders go here and both can relate to the magazine in some sort of way-even if it's just basic Wyke updates. For the SEG (socio-economic groups) I found that the group will be semi skilled, unskilled manual workers and unemployed. This is because some people in Wyke have a job outside of college, which would show they are semi skilled. Most don't which creates them being manual workers. I found that the psycho graphics would be groups who are outer-directed, belongers, emulators and achievers. This is because the students all belong to one group, for example the fact they are all students. They would be emulators as they would look up to teachers and previous students at Wyke, being guided by what they've done to become a higher achiever. They will also achieve; as the goal when started Wyke is to 'achieve full potential and become qualified in subjects chosen. I showed this by using purple as my main colour so it's not automatically thought to be for girls if I used pink. I also used a student at Wyke to show it's for around people her age. I also used activities that would only happen during college hours to show it's for 16-24's who actually are enrolled at the college itself. I used large cover lines to attract my audience into reader what was there, adding kickers to these to force them into wanting to purchase it or turn to the page announced.
REPRESENTATION- My media product represents particular social groups in various ways. I represented a happy and approachable college by using bright colours such as purple and white - this pushed my cover lines out making them stand out and easy for the students to read. I created a look of the student being happy and clever as she is portrayed in a way which seems bubbly, calm and relaxed. Holding her Wyke book shows confidence and an educational representation of the college. The student is dressed smart/casual - she's not under dressed but is wearing clothes that are still suitable for college and give off an impression that Wyke college is a positive, smart environment. I believe this also denotates she is happy at this college and enjoys the environment around her as she doesn't look nervous.
I tried to use no stereotypes as I believe this would give the wrong representation of of the college. I used an even amount of anchorage with my thumbnail images so the activities and sports are not just aimed at one gender. I believe there is a few connotations used on the cover lines even if it's a simple punctuation mark. On the cover line 'have your say' it uses the word 'YOUR' to make us feel involved and part of what's going on. An exclamation mark is used to emphasise this whole sentence and create the illusion of them shouting at us.
Mediation is also used on the front page as another event out side of college is coming between the magazine and promoting itself. In this case it's the Wyke party that is being promoted a few times on the front of my magazine. This shows a positive outlook to Wyke as all the students can come together and enjoy a night out whilst feeling relaxed from work.
