Magazine Conventions.

Magazine cover conventions.


Masthead: The magazine’s title. This is displayed in the top left corner. This tells us what the magazine is called, it has a certain colour and style so it is easily recognized by the audience. The masthead is usually in large letters so the readers attention goes straight there.
Price: Magazine cost.
Barcode: Read electronically and decoded into useable information. This is placed at the bottom of the magazine so the reader can see the content first and is not automatically drawn to the bar code.
Dateline: Weekly: Usually from Saturday to Friday. Monthly: a month ahead.
Issue number: A tally of magazines.
Teaser: One word/phrase acts as an attention grabber.
Main feature: Headline: A phrase that may summarise the main point of the main feature. In large print, different style, bold colours in order to catch the attention of the reader. It may also over lap onto an image to show importance of the headline.
Subtitle: Smaller headline that may summarise the feature.
Smaller feature: Features included in the magazine, for example competitions or other important articles.
Images: Size: CU to med CU. Ranges from one main image to x amount featuring one main image and smaller images. Helps make the page look more interesting. It can add understanding of a story and/or entice someone to read the magazine.
Font: Style and size of type face.
Colour: Specific/stylistic/thematic types.
Graphics: Graphical shapes to highlight feature(s)
Offers/adverts blurb: Banner-style shape featuring free products/promotions.
Screamer: Like a headline.
Kicker: Kicks you to turn to a page, for example ‘this is on page 3’ this draws the reader into hopefully purchasing the magazine.
Left third: Graphics that take up the left of the screen. This is usually the masthead, sell lines and offers/adverts.
Cover line: A brief announcement that appears on the front of the magazine.
Splash: The whole page with different graphics.
 Credit: Who took the photo/article.
Graphology: The handwriting used.
Anchorage: Used to add meaning to images.
Vocabulary: The body of words used in languages.
Skyline:  Things appealing at the top of the page. For example other artists/bands featured in the magazine or competitions. This is to attract the reader as it's at the top of the page.
Flash:  Competition or something standing out on the page.
Sell lines: Striking sentences used to draw buyer in.
Teller:  Tells you what the magazine has in it at the top.
Colour scheme: a planned combination of colours. This is also the house-style, it is used to make the magazine easily recognizable by readers and shows the same theme of colour throughout the magazine to show organisation and create a professional look of a magazine.
