L.I.I.A.R Analysis of two college magazines and contents page.

#1

Language- The imagine on the front of this magazine is positive and vibrant. The student looks very happy and enthusiastic. The colour scheme they have used is pink and white which helps the text stand out as it's a faded sort of white background. The colour pink stereo-typically symbolises females, which could imply they are targeting the female audience. They've used bright colours throughout the front page (including the text) which would attract the audience as if dark colours where used students might find it boring and dull. The font they've used has made the magazine look more sophisticated, rather than using a tacky font that would be hard to read. At the top left is the masthead which is clear to see. Underneath this is a subtitle- written on it says 'result!' this would attract the more mature readers as they would be interested to read about the results at the college and how they can achieve these. We can see they are aiming at the teen audience as they've use quick sentences to attract them into wanting to read more into it. If there was long explanatory sentences the students would find it boring and just skim through it.
Institution- The institution is the college. I think students would help to create this magazine as it seems to look laid back and friendly, and not in a formal way which adults would tend to make it seem.
Ideology- The ideology of the college magazine is to promote the college as being incredibly educational as they have promoted themselves alot on the front page, including the subtitle 'result!'. They also aim to promote a good social life in college as the kickers encourage events. I think this magazine aims to balance between a good social life and also achieving high potential at this college.
Audience- The colours are very dominant. Pink represents girls, so I got the impression it's mainly for girls, but this could just be the colour scheme. I believe boys would attend here too as there is a sports round up on the kicker photo which includes boys.
Representation- The student looks incredibly happy. They are holding a results sheet which encourages education. They are being portrayed in a positive manner as we can see she looks very happy and is dressed smart casual so we can get the impression the college is laid back but not under dressed.

Language- The image on the front of this page is loud and pops out at us. The colours used are summery, using green, yellows and oranges. This shows a positive outlook to Wyke and the student looks very happy. They could be targetting male and female because these colours aren't stereotyped to be to a certain audience. The bright colours will attract the audience into wanting to read this magazine. The way it's been set out implies it's for students as they have used post it notes on the front page - this gives off a teen like feel. The font is bold and large, making it easier to read. They have used competitions and kickers to attract the audience into reading the magazine.
Institution- The institution is Wyke College. I can see that students would help to create this college magazine as it has revision techniques which could be submitted by students themselves to give their personal techniques.
Ideology-The idea of this magazine is to promote a fun college lifestyle as the girl on the front of the magazine is posed in a way which she looks excited and happy. I think they are trying to attract a positive and educational look on the college as they are advertising trips that would benefit the students. It also promotes you getting involved with the college, asif they are trying to create a friendly atmosphere. They do this by advertising competitions which students could compete in. To attract the audience to participate they say 'page 12..' which is a kicker as it would want us to look and see what it is.
Audience- The audience is aimed at 16-18 as this is the age which students usually start and finish college. We can see it's for this age group as it's very informal. The audience could be male and female as Wyke College holds both genders. However, there is a female dominating the front cover which could signify that the magazine is based towards the female side.
Representation- The student is being represented as a happy individual who enjoys the environment around her, to do this the editor has used bright colours such as green and yellow which signifies happiness.

Language- The imagine on the front of this magazine doesn't stand out to the audience, she's hiding her face and it's hard to see if she's happy or not. The colour scheme however is black white and pink. White connotates innocence, which could show she's shy and timid, however the pink text is bright and in your face signifying the magazine is positive. The text isn't very appealing as it's not detailed as to what's in the magazine, it just has page numbers. At the top left is the title page which is clear to see but doesn't stand out much. Not many conventions have been used such as thumbnail images or subheadings.

Institution- The institution is the college. I think students would help to create this magazine as it seems to look laid back and very informal. However, we can see the mise en scene fits with the college magazine as she's wearing a uniform.
Ideology- The ideology of the college contents page in my opinion is very secretive, the institution seem to be hiding a lot of the content which could represent them as being rebellious as they want us to purchase the magazine to see what's inside it fully. I don't think the contents page gives a positive outlook on the college as there really isn't that much text to support a fun, educational look on the college.
Audience- The pink text stands out on the rest of the splash, which is a stereotypical colour to represent females. However, the rest of the colours and the splash itself is very dull and uses dark colours, this could represent the male gender but it's hard to tell. The audience are being represented as timid as there's not a lot of information on the contents page. Although the audience are based 16-18 as it's a college magazine, in my opinion the audience are 12-15. I think this because the contents page is very minimum, the fonts are bright and tacky and it's very basic considering it's a college magazine for 16-18s.
Representation- The students are being represented as educational in a way as we can see the model has a uniform on and is looking down a microscope.

Language- The contents page title is very dominant as it's large at the top left. The colours in the background (green and white) work well together to create a positive look on the college. The contents page looks informal, creating a laid back look for the magazine. The contents page uses a thumbnail convention which gives a more sophisticated approach to the magazine as we can see the college itself and not just the students. The institution has used bright colours to attract the audience and make the contents page eye-catching. The mise en scene is simple clothing which shows the students can be whatever they want as they don't have a uniform.
Institution- The institution would be the college. You can tell students would help to create this magazine as the informal approach carries on throughout the front cover and contents page. The splash is set out unconventionally which signify's rebellion.
Audience- I think the audience for this college magazine are 16-18, this is because the contents page looks informal yet still at a high level to be based at 16-18s. I get the impression the magazine is for mainly girls as a group of girls are dominating the front cover, and the colours are bright which stereotypes 'girly' girls. I think the audience would be seen and educational as the contents page has a lot of information about the college itself, including a thumbnail image.
Representation- The students are being represented as a group as they are all sat together. This could show that the college is a fun and friendly environment to be around. The students are also being represented as happy as they are all sat smiling and the body language is positive and laid back.
